Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcakes w/ Peanut Butter Filling [insert foodgasm here]

New York City has so many fantastic bakeries, that everyone has a different opinion about where to find the best cupcakes. Butter Lane, Magnolia Bakery, Sprinkles, yada yada yada. But MY favorite cupcake spot, Two Little Red Hens, happens to be across the street from where I live – which sucks, because it makes it that much more difficult to avoid.

I’m a master baker (*pause*), so I usually think most of these big name, touristy-type places are overrated. Sure, the cupcakes are good at all of them, but it’s nothing I’d freak out about. Two Little Red Hens, however… I must say, they make the perfect cupcake.

My current favorite is their chocolate peanut butter cupcakes with a peanut butter filling. Although it sounds rich as hell, it’s actually not too sweet AT ALL – unlike most of these bakeries that load up their frosting with confectioner’s sugar, butter, and not much else. Also, if you couldn’t tell by the photos, the cake itself is about as moist as it gets.

Other popular varieties include the key lime (my friend Bekki’s favorite), and their signature yellow cupcake with a chocolate pudding filling.

What sets Two Little Red Hens apart, is that they’re not a chain bakery, nor are they a huge establishment that caters to hoards of tourists on a daily basis. Their small batch system definitely makes it easier to maintain a high level of quality, resulting in each cupcake tasting as if its homemade.

Two Little Red Hens is located in the Upper East Side (thank gawd) at 1652 2nd Ave (between 85th and 86th).
